I don't use nearly as much of the turnings as is called for in those other 
recipes. I put in just enough to gray the borax and give it a salt and 
pepper look. The filings are used as an indicator of welding temp. so I 
don't get that much carbon transfer.I'm using it mostly for damascus so it 
offsets any carbon loss in the billet.
