They could just be trying you, by blowing something past you to see what
you say.
After checking Grants reference, my response at this point would be.

"When you asked me that my first thought was that they weren't steeled,
but then again it wouldn't be the first time I was wrong.
After checking my sources it turns out I apparently was correct with my
first impression.
For your own reference may I suggest .
"Firearms, Traps and Tools of the Mountain Men" by Russell
If you have contradicting references or source samples I would be most
interested in seeing them."
