At least in smallish stock, I found the hardest thing was keeping the
orientation of the eye aligned with the stock.  The first even
slightly ambitious piece I did was an end table using 1/2" through
1/2" square grillwork.  Nobody on hand to tell me it was too hard for
a novice so I did it anyway.  I think I still have laying around,
35 years later, some of the discarded 1/2" square bars with square but
wrong and unrepairable square eyes in them.
