Folks,
Fire regulations allow me to have larger than 20
pounders my area in the shop. The fire chief,
inspected my shops and then said I need more fire
extinguishers and a bunch of signs to be put in my
work areas. He also said the 100# could be inside, if
it is only connected to my forge, with a shutoff vavle
at the bottle, one at the forge, an "inspected"
regulator, and that I have an appropriate size fire
extinguishers next to that work area. I have a large
CO2 fire extinguishers right at the forge and then
many of those ABC type hung around the building. Then
he told me that I need to talk to my insurance agent.
O.K. the insurance agent said since I am classified as
Agro Business and that smithing is included under that
definition with my policy, he didn't see any problem
if the fire chief said it was O.K. So I have a bunch
of No Smoking signs up, Danger Flammable Material
signs posted and No Open flames, etc, etc either
ordered or posted, I will be in compliance. I have a
fire extinguishers for every 400 sq ft, one fire
blanket in the area that I forge and weld, which I use
for a welding blanket from time to time.
The foundry building will be a block building with a
metal roof, between my barn and the main shop. Then I
will run gas lines to the appropriate places.
This whole gets really involved, but I have a
Propane/Oxy jewelers torch on jewelry making work
bench and I had to chain the bottles to a fixed point,
which is a leg post on my work bench.
THis is why I am asking questions and somethings can
not be do it yourself because of insurance
regulations, otherwise I have no zoning or other
stupid regulations. What regulation we have are simple
and easy to comply with.
