No, Ken, it was just mild steel.  A little mill scale and maybe a little light surface rust was all.  When I get back to the shop later this week, I'll see about gas flow.

Was the metal plated?  Zinc plating (galvanized) will make welding difficult because the zinc vaporizes at a much lower temperature than the liquid steel.
