Folks: Amen for recycling.....I ahve made some of my best tools/knives,etc.
from old springs. I have had very good luck with making French Pattern
Trade Knives from PU truck coils. These were pieces of roughly 6/8"
diameter, when cut into 4" lengths, made fine FT knives with 5" blades.
With careful attention to heat treat, they consistently out cut my Henckels
kitchen blades. You can see 'em at www.grantsforge.com

Anyway, there is just so much wonderful stuff out there that be had for
nothing or next to it. I'm always amazed! But then again, I have had to
carry water and I'm still amazed that you can turn a tap and get drinkable
water...hell, even HOT drinkable water. But I guess I'm preaching to the
choir. Grant

Here we have Big Junk Day (actually two weeks, different days in
different parts of the county) and some people are even kein enough to
pile usable stuff separate from the real refuse so bargain hunters
won't have to root through a pile of rotting boards, old barbed wire
and rusty crap to find the treasures. The fume exhaust system in the
shop is made entirely from BJD finds. Even found a beautiful old
cabinet maker's vice with a 2-1/2" threaded wood screw that was so
nice that I felt obliged to go and find the owner to confirm that it
was really Designated Junk. And it was.

To bad I don't have a photo of my 1974 pig house made from a Renault
R4. Raised some exceptionally fine pork in and around that Renault.
Served better as a pig house than it had as a car. :-)

There are a number of people who try to cover the whole county and
skim off the best or most vaulable stuff in the last days or hours
before official pickup. I'm hoping that the spike in scrap copper
price will cause them to start passing up old iron in their haste to
find another piece of copper pipe, TV or electric motor. Week after
next. 8-)
