Dan,
This is a private response.
I can see how you'd feel paranoid about this. I'm
glad to hear you stood up for yourself. I, for one,
never had any doubt your intentions were good. I am
very much against careless messing around with
explosives and other nasties, which is why I posted my
response warning of the dangers of these chemicals.
You might do well to request a written copy of
chemical disposal procedures in your district. I
wouldn't be surprized to find they're nonexistent or
minimal. Where, for example, does it say that you
WEREN'T allowed to "dispose" of these chemicals FOR
the district? You might be the injured party in this
affair. Had you Since when is it "stealing" to take
someones trash? My point is that you may very well
want to contest having a letter put into your
personnel file. Approach it from the standpoint that
you were trying to make constructive use of what the
district regarded as trash, you PUBLICLY solicited
advice on how to safely do so, EVEN SO FAR as to
publicly announce where you got the stuff.
For that matter, if you'd like me to come to bat for
you with a letter on your behalf, I'd be glad to do
so. I've seen LOTS of stuff stupidly thrown away by
anal retentive morons who are more concerned with
guarding their own asses than with any honest concern
about safe and proper disposal, etc. I could turn
this around to make you look like a hero, and make the
narc who ratted on you look like the slime he is.
This narc-ing, by the way, reminds me of an incident
from several years ago. It was one of the first
Gichner hammer-ins hosted by Dave Hutchison. A bunch
of us had gone out for dinner and drinks one evening.
Dave and some others landed at one table in a local
restaurant & bar, while I and a few other came in a
little after them and landed at another table. After
dinner, I noteced Dave and crew were still at their
table, but didn't think much of it. Dave told the
story later. Finally, Dave and crew started getting
irritated because they hadn't even been served dinner
by the time we had left!
Seems they'd been talking blacksmithing, discussing
"tons of coke". A waiter overheard them and called
the cops. Cops told waiter to keep them there.
Apparently the cops showed up in some force after my
group had already left.
Fortunaetly, the Hutchenson brothers are well known in
the area, mostly as farmers & mechanics, but Dave is
also known as a blacksmith. (You only have to ask
"blacksmith meet?" to be pointed to his farm, anywhere
east of the Annapolis bridge). Me, I would have
demanded retribution - at least a round of drinks,
free, from the bar - for this imposition.
Maybe it's just me, but I feel when someone does you a
dirty like this, you should get your digs in quickly,
for the record. Don't even let them entertain the
notion that theft was involved. You were recycling.
Best wishes,
Bruce Freeman
