Bob,
I have the HF red engine hoist, mine isn't even the
collapsible portable version. We moved a knee mill,
into the shop, the garage door was the height
restriction, we just put 2 x 4s across the legs of the
hoist, then lowered the mill on to the 2 x 4s and with
4 guys pushed it in to the shop. We did a really great
job of getting in place, except the engine hoist was
trapped behind the mill. But I thought ahead, I had
removed all of the bolts and replaced them with
cleaves pins. If you need to justify the cost of the
hoist, try to rent one, then divide that number into
$150, in the area where I used to live, the rental
hoist was $35 a day.
The nearest HF to me is about 90 minutes away in about
three different directions, but I used to live 5
minutes away from one.
The best thing you can buy your shop is the HF 4 x 8
trailer with the 12 inch tires. You can haul your
stuff around without owning a big pickup truck. I have
a Honda Element, a great van, good mileage. my hitch
is from Whitney, you can install it in short order.
The trailer can handle about one thousand pounds, plus
the Element can haul more stuff inside the van.
I am kind of torn between having a engine hoist and a
crane type of hoist. THe shop structure will not
handle any kind of crane system, but I do have the
over head room. Plus I really don't want to tie up
space and time building some things. So far the engine
hoist works well and when not needed, I take it apart
and lay up against the side of garage for storage.
