What are you welding on? Coal or propane?

You've got to keep the scarf clean, you, but you really don't need to
"see" anything more than that the metal is positioned correctly, and
for the welding itself, you want it hot enough that it's almost
burning- a very bright yellow.

In addition to keeping the scarf clean, too, your whole fire needs to
be clean- clean coal worked into clean coke, and no residues from,
say, brass. It's actually easier to start out figuring what you're
doing with a charcoal fire (real charcoal, sold as "lump" charcoal,
not briquets), since it's naturally clean.
