Just some random observations:

First of all I know none of the board members.

I can, though,  feel confident that none of them intended that they look 
foolish by having the conference fail.

I do see a number of comments that the conference is way too pricey to 
allow  many of us to drive or fly across the country, or even half way 
across.

A "professional" conference may just be more than the donkey will bear. 
Very nice and all, but just not what we need.

If ABANA has invested itself in the glitz, perhaps it needs to be rethought.
 Just what constitutes glitz is a matter for debate.

Taking a survey of just those  who went to a conference is of little use 
if one wants to increase attendance.
It would be far more useful to seek input from those who chose not to 
attend, both members and potential/ex members.

I have been on enough boards to know that even with competent folks, 
doing their best, things do not always work out.

I have also been on boards that refused, as a body, to accept feedback 
and utilize it to set a better course.
There were always some of us willing to change but not enough. This was 
never a good thing.
