Okay- so another approach might be a spring swage- this would
probably require a power hammer, as opposed to the abalone squisher-
but you make a spring swage with a ball on one arm, and a donut on
the other- I have a similar, larger radius swage I made for dishing
plate on the power hammer, and it works great- I lathe turned, then
ground, the male, which is a portion of a sphere, then used it to
actually forge the female.
Bring the female up to heat, but leave the male cold, then just put
it in the hammer and let it create itself.

In this case, you use an appropriately sized ball, maybe 1" or so, on
the end of one arm of the spring swage, and actually stick that
inside the pipe.

I have an arm on my power hammer to clamp spring swages to, so you
can use both hands to rotate the stock while hammering.

I have been meaning to build one of these myself one of these days,
and try it out, but I cant think of any reason it wouldnt work.
