I've never tried it either, but I've seen the results.
John Wykoff (?) and Dan Radven did some "soybean pods"
for FMC, I think. I only saw slides, but they were
clear slides. They cut out the outline (maybe 2' or
3' long - extra large soy beans!), welded two sides
together, then swelled it with localized heat.
Instead of swelling like a balloon, to its limit, the
localized heat allowed them to create bulges
corresponding to the "beans in the pod." Very
effective.
