Just a suggestion -- You could try leadless pewter. Google for
"Britannia metal". I have a 10 pound-ish ingot, and you can get it in
sheet, too. I haven't personally hammered on any, but I've heard it can
be done. Maybe someone else on the list knows more?

I like the idea of practicing on tin. The only problem with that is I
don't
have any except in the form of solder wire. I have plenty of lead, but
I
sure don't want kids playing with that! I guess I'll have to look
around

At least one blacksmith suggested starting students out learning to
hammer
by
using clay. There are also very soft metals like tin that a child could
practice
on without heat.
