Marc,
Kastolite 3000 is probably 80% as insulative as ceramic blanket, if you are
going for high temperatures (yellow hot interior). At lower temperatures the
ceramic blanket is much more effective. I do not recommend castable refractory
over ceramic blanket for forges unless you are doing billet heating. Please
remember that Harry is considering building a forge/furnace, which will take as
much abuse as if he were doing billet heating.

I have to replace ceramic blanket in my forge this year but, I built it almost
10 years ago. I did however put a hard fire brick on the floor to take most of
the abuse. I have been really happy with it.
Does the refractory have the same insulative quality as the blanket?
