Isn't fluorspar, the flux used for forge welding ss also toxic?
The OSHA man would have had a fit if he looked at the stuff we did in
construction, ie, fumes, sparks, noise, asbestos, fiberglass, glue, carbon
tetrachloride, sulfur, acid, lead, copper sulfate, lead based paint, etc.
Much of it is common sense - They thought I was crazy insisting on eye & ear
protection when using a 32 caliber Ram Set gun in cured concrete, and fans
when welding galvanized beams, but the boss dared not refuse my work order
for safety equipment.

You probably want to add stainless to your list of metals that
require respiratory protection. Hexavalent chromium is becoming the
new welding workplace OSHA bugaboo. All kinds of new ventilation and
worker protection requirements around chromium bearing metals welding
and grinding.
