Another thing that can be used is one of those 1' square marble tiles from
places like Menards.
They also work great! We use a couple of those in our oven and turn out
probably 20+ loaves a month of bread using my homemade Sourdough starter.
I wouldn't recommend going to Home Depot because of the 'support illegal Day
Worker' policies though.

Another purpose of the stone is to have something that stores heat. As the
stone heats up, it stores more heat than a metal pan. When I am baking, the
top is often brown before the inside is cooked. I can turn off the oven,
but leave the bread on the stone (in my case, a thick (3/4 inch) ceramic
bowl. The hot stone will continue to cook from below without cooking the
top of the bread.
