I had to reply to another male Lynn.
The 4 1/2" angle grinder is one of the first metal
working tools I had in my shop (mostly woodworking). I
admit I made several swords and daggers where the
angle grinder was my only power tool. These were from
316C stainless and for stage use only.
Not only can you grind using abrasive wheels, clean
and make a finish with wire brushes, but it is also
useful for many other finishes. I have put a mirror
polish on steel using sanding disks, 3M non-woven
pads, and buffing using only the side grinder.
A couple of things that I have learned that are useful
to me. Don't use the grinder with the switch. The
trigger controls the tool much better and is safer.
When the trigger is released the tool stops but the
switch always seems to be placed in an awkward place
and takes three hands to control. Having only 2 hands
puts the human at a disadvantage.
Buy the best sanding disks for steel. The cheap ones
don't seem to work at all, not even for a short time.
This was a hard lesson for someone as frugal as I am.
I found them locally at auto body supply shops and, of
all things, a marble finishing shop. Milkwee used to
make a random orbit attachment that is much more
aggressive then the random orbit tools. I haven't seen
it around for a while and they may not make this
useful tool any longer.
The 3M non-woven pads do great clean up and finishing
ready for polishing. You do need the backing pad sold
for these pads, not just any hook and loop or Velcro
pad. They come in 4 different 'grits' but most places
only carry one or 2. On line is the only reliable
source I know.
This has been long and rambling but I hope helpful.
Later,
Lynn
