I like to keep one of my 4 1/2" grinders set up with a knotted wire 
brush, it gives an interesting finish quickly.  But... I always wear eye 
protection & a leather apron, and I still get to pull a few wires out of 
my skin from time to time.  Those buggers come off the brush fast enough 
to stick right in you.  And definitely use both hands!   The brush will 
grab and fling the grinder around in an instant, usually where it can do 
the most damage, if you try to work one-handed.

I also have a regular wire brush in a bench grinder, that seems to be 
safer (that is, when it grabs a piece it tends to throw it into the 
bench rather than across the shop).

The flap wheels are a whole lot easier to work with!
