I've heard it called a Celtic Cross. (The larger the overlap, the larger the
diamond). Preacher goes a step further and forges the center round. I make
them out of railroad spikes and flatten the head for a base.

I use a band saw to cut the blank instead of trying to hot chisel
the piece apart. I have not been able to get the chisel to meet exactly in
the center of the bar reliably and a real mess that cannot be corrected is
the result. The secret to the diamond shaped hole is overlapped cuts 90
degrees apart along the axis of the bar stock. If you are using 1 inch
square bar the overlap is 1 inch - or equal to the parent stock cross
section. On 1/2" sq overlap the cuts 1/2". The only other decision is how
long do you want the arms and the top and bottom piece to be. It is easier
to do than to describe.

Is there an on-line tutorial for how to make a christopher cross? I think I
have the name right... If not, does anyone know which book it is shown in?
Someone once gave me a lovely bronze christopher cross. I'm thinking it
would be a nice fundraiser item for our church.
