You say it seems to be well refined, maybe it picked up a small amount of 
carbon in the refining process.

Is it all consistent or are some parts more grainy than others?

Maybe the grain was created when it was rolled? I don't know if this is 
possible for a fine grain but I've had steel split into pieces when 
twisting. Made a rack for a truck using 2" channel from Japan that split 
into 1" angle when the guy drove it with a load. Had to do the job over for 
free. I have had square bars splinter when twisting(Encouraging for 
structural steel)
