Luck doesn't have a damned thing to do with it.
Dave, this is right where some stinkin' thinkin' is starting.
Who says 99% of the attendees need motel rooms? Yes, they need a place
to sleep, and a place to eat, but you're talking a bunch of
blacksmiths, for heaven's sakes. Last conference, they "needed" a
dance band, too- but did they really? Or was this just something that
someone got in their head would make the conference more attractive?
I really, really, think you need to rethink what you're trying to
accomplish here. We aren't trying to set up a three day tour of Disney
World with anvils- we're trying to have a conference for blacksmiths.
Instead of ASS U MEin' things, why not work out a poll, and ASK the
people involved? Maybe, special letters going out to last year's
attendees, as well as to the folks who aren't attending any more?
Maybe even asking someone for a donation of something that a voter can
get a chance on a drawing for, since apparently everyone's so bored
with what's happening, you hafta bribe them to pay attention.
What you've been doing flat ain't working. It's time to change.
