[TheForge] Traveling Gas

If your burner is built correctly. That is the jet is pointed generally to
the center of the burning tube . You burner length is close to the 9:1 rule
( the length of the burner tube from the front end of the air inlet holes is
9 times the inner diameter of the burner tube) your jet is close to the
correct size and you have a flare or a nozzle on the burner . If these
conditions are met your burner will work and the flame will not travel back
up the burner tube. But If your jet is fouled or is pointed to the side of
the burner tube, You have insufficient air flow into the burner or the
burner length is too short or too long you might get a burn in the burner
tube. The flame should sit just inside the flare/nozzle. I like the nozzle
better because it impinges on the flame just a little and provides a
secondary ignition point when it gets hot. The flare does the same thing
but the flame doesn't touch it as much. Both provide a place where the
mixed gas can slow down and burn with out blowing out. The porter burner is
a bit more work to make but is a lot more controllable than the side arm or
Reil type burners. All of the burners benefit from a choke to help the
burner start when cold and to do a little fine adjustment when u[p to temp.

Jerry,
Try the existing burners first (Reil, Porter, etc.). The work *really*
well, and I don't think they will work as well if you put screen in
them. There is no problem in these burners with the flame climbing the
tube, the flame is controlled by the flare at the business end.
