If the anvil hasn't been beaten up to bad, and the asking price is
something you can swing, I'd suggest you see about owning it.

I've bought and sold several anvils over the years, and always made a few
dollars for my time.

Like a lot of wannabe smiths, I started out hammering, using a chunk of
rail road track as an anvil. A friend and I bought a really beat up old
anvil at an auction. After countless hours of welding and grinding, it
turned out somewhat better to work on than the RR Iron.

My first "good" old anvil weighed about 135 pounds and cost me about $2 a
pound, & that was back when I kept hearing that $1 a pound was the going
rate for old anvils. The point was that I didn't have to drive 200 miles
to get it, and didn't have to spend dozens of hours re-working it. I
still use and love that old anvil, and have bought and re-sold some other
anvils since.

The weight numbers on the side: the first number is usually taken times
112 pounds. The 2nd number is quarters of that, and the last number is
actual pounds. SO a 3: 3 x 112, the 2: 2/4 of 112 pounds, and the 1 is
one pound. Does your Peter Wright look and feel like it could weigh 383
pounds ???
