[TheForge] Trip Hammer Report (Longish)

Robert,

Someday I hope to be able to say that my Mayer 25 can purr or growl. But, I fear I have a ways to go. It would be fun to take my hammer to Sid for a makeover; he's only about 430 miles from me. (As you know, that's just a short hop for a Texan.) But I think I need to educate myself a lot more about my toy before I do anything drastic. I think the main bearings are in pretty good shape, but there are a lot of other joints that are loose. I have not attempted to take the top apart yet. But I will need to soon because that is the only way to replace the vee belts.

Does anyone know where I can get an exploded view of the top of a Mayer Bros. hammer? I'm not real sure how to take it apart. It is different from the LGs in that the main bearings are cast iron and part of the frame (not poured babbet). Sid says they are very durable and often need no machining.

Good luck finding homes for your hammers. I suspect it will be a long time before I need a 100 or 250.

Aubrey

Howdy Aubrey. I've decided that I'm going to have to split them up, but I
think I'll try and sell the 2 big guys first(100 and 250, it's really,
really BIG), then the Fifty and then the 25. The 25 is a fantastic machine.
I sent a lot of the moving parts to Sid, and he did a wonderful job of
getting them in tolerance, and that 25 can purr, or growl. Freshly painted
as if that mattered (some like them left in their barn clothing)and a new 1
HP motor. The 50 didn't need a thing done to it, but it did get a new motor
(1.5 HP). Anyway, I'll try to work up some prices and get them on the right
pages, etc.
Robert
