When heated, borax does form a black, glassy, very hard to remove
glop. I've also had a hard time removing flux from commercial coated
brazing rod. Both adhere so well that pickle doesn't get under it
easily.

Got me there.

If the adhering crap is brittle, maybe turn the cup over and hit it
on the underside with a needle scaler? That works for me cleaning the
glassy creosote deposits out of my stainless stove pipe. Hammer it
all over with a needle scaler and it get pretty nice and clean inside.
Unless it's a hot day, in which case the black stuff isn't brittle
enough to flake off.
