[TheForge] More Drill Press stuff

Good question -- I don't know about these big machines, but am curious
about the kind of "qualitative capacity" of drill presses that has
been discussed here recently. Does this notion of capacity have to do
with what the machine will handle at full bore without any caution or
patience?? I can drill 1/2" holes in 1/2" plate with "no problems"
with my $40 HF benchtop piece-o-crap, however I did have to go get a
really good bit, set the speed down to the slowest belt position, and
dribble a little oil in for coolant (as might be expected). What am I
missing out on? The way these discussions are going, I thought y'all
might be talking about ironworker specs, and their punching capacities
:)
The big drill presses still use low speed and coolant, but I presume
the models being discussed use a down-feed (not just elbow grease) so
maybe that is what I'm missing? It is natural to assume one could
work bigger pieces in a bigger machine w/ more power, etc, but are we
discussing the actual limits of a machine or the comfortable working
norms of these drill presses?
A bigger older press is in fact on my list, so I'm NOT promoting the
HF model, although it does what I seem to need for now...
