[TheForge] firscreens

James,
I've only made a couple, so I'm sure not an expert. I got my wire from MSC.
It needs to be heavy guage 6 to 8 wires per inch. I made the special tongs
that Francis Whitiker talks about in his cook book, they worked nice. I
made a second frame which attached to the back side to sandwitch the wire.
As I streatched it I put vice grips around the frame to keep it tight. I
then put in rivets to make it perminate. If you want to be able to replace
the screen you could use carrage bolts, but the screen is strong enough that
it is unlikely that it will ever need replacing.

I've got a couple of requests for custom fire screens. This will be my
first time to make those. I need some comments on how to attach the
wire to the frame, and what kind of wire to use and where to get it.
I assume, hat most custom ones are done by making a crease or fold in
the metal, maybe 2 pieces and inserting the screen and then pressing
them together to hold the wire??? Or maybe using tabs to hold the wire???
Will regular wire screen door/window screen work ok??? or do I need to
get stainless screen mesh??? If so, where is it available from?
Thanks,
