McMaster-Carr has many mesh sizes of wire cloth in both steel,
stainless, and bronze. It comes in various wire gauges and sold by the
linear foot. I used bronze on a fire screen to nice effect. You want a
relatively heavy gauge wire in 6 or 8 mesh, but is depends on what look
you want. Also, Francis Whitaker's book, the Blacksmith's Cookbook, has
a section on fire screens, including special tongs for stretching the
screen taunt during riveting.

Subject: [TheForge] firscreens
I've got a couple of requests for custom fire screens. This will be my
first time to make those. I need some comments on how to attach the
wire to the frame, and what kind of wire to use and where to get it.
I assume, hat most custom ones are done by making a crease or fold in
the metal, maybe 2 pieces and inserting the screen and then pressing
them together to hold the wire??? Or maybe using tabs to hold the
wire???
Will regular wire screen door/window screen work ok??? or do I need to
get stainless screen mesh??? If so, where is it available from?
Thanks,
James Allcorn
