You can still buy them from Singer and they're not very dear.  I
recently bought one to use with an old belt-drive dental drill. C$20
IIRC.

My main forge blower runs on a vintage AC/DC motor and I just have an
ordinary house light dimmer for a speed control.  I've heard various
opinions about how that won't work or won't work without extra
electronic components.  But mine worked for 25 years.  I replaced the
dimmer ca. 4 years ago because the old one was damaged in the move so
it isn't the case that dimmers sold 25 years ago were different.
YMMV, though.
