I'm no expert, but if it says to use a rheostat, DON'T
use a gate. Use a diverter instead - an air leak of
some sort. That way you won't be lugging the motor,
just wasting some of its output.
It shouldn't be too hard to come up with a rheostat.
I'm not sure, but one of those foot pedals from an old
sewing machine might do the trick.
