If the studs themselves are ugly, make pieces of textured black pipe
or tube rolled from 16 ga. or 1/8" to slip over the studs as
stand-offs.  Use brass acorn nuts if they make good highlights, else
weld the nuts to the backs of forged ornamental elements to conceal
them.

Or make the studs themselves from textured black pipe. Weld nuts to
the outer ends, then use bolts with ornamental forged heads to bolt to
the hollow studs.

Or maybe I don't fully understand the problem.
