Kenny, make the bottom jaw in a U shape with the U pointing up to cradle right
behind the head of the spike, and leave room (like bolt tongs) for the head.
The upper jaw split fore and aft with the aft section to come and secure the
head of the spike and prevent slipping back. The fore section to hold the tong
into the U shaped bottom jaw.  Rivet and rein to suit.

Or alternativly  weld a temporary rod to the spike to use as a handle.
