Okay, that makes sense.
So you want to stop adding iron before you make ferrous chloride.
This would also explain how ferric chloride etches iron - the ferric
becomes ferrous while the iron also becomes ferrous.
I haven't looked into the electropotentials of these reactions, so this
is speculative.

The response I sent you didn't make it to theforge.
Maybe you can post it.  I just tried a test and can send all the
characters
in it to the forge but even typing it in a new message it wouldn't
go...not
sure why.

Yes, Rust and HCL will make Ferric Chloride but if you let the cleaned
iron
in the solution til no more is absorbed, the iron will convert the
ferric
chloride to ferrous chloride
