i will join you in being a heretic. for the past two months i have been
looking at the midi-metal lathes offered by harbor freight, grizzly,
enco, and others. after reading many e-mail list archives and talking
with several people i decided that i will continue to look for a used
south bend 9inch or 10 inch. while still looking for the south bend i
will continue to build a modified version of the gingery metal lathe.

when i buy items such as this from harbor freight i figure that if it
breaks i can take it apart to see 0. how it works 1. can i fix it. 2.
can i make it better. without feeling guilty if all i do is cannabilize
it for parts.

i have heard this before from others. my friend, charlie, a carpenter,
and i were out last saturday to berland's. (www.berlandtools.com)
i asked charlie which were his tool choices.
makita for circular saw, bosch for jig saw, porter cable for router,
milwaukee for drills. senco or bosch for nailers.
