Andy,
It is not on the Mall, but there is great stuff to see in the Washington
National Cathedral - 3101 Mass Ave. NW - take a cab.
As well as Nol Putnams rather new gates downstairs in the burial vault
area, are the tons of work done around the chapels on the main level.
Work done by Samuel Yellin, the Kaiser Brothers, and several others.
Take a flashlight for seeing details. Some of my favorites are the
Yellin grill that surrounds the Childrens Chapel with endless scrolls
each ending in a different bird or animal head, and some of the candle
stands and hanging lights.
If you can locate a docent who is not busy, ask to see the Bishop door
handle that is on the inside the door to the room where the choir robes
are kept. Maybe you can talk her into showing you other "hidden" ironwork.
Closer to the Mall is the Renwick Gallery, the fine crafts collection of
the Smithsonian. I don't know what is on display now, but the gates on
the gift shop were one of Albert Paley's early big jobs.
