If I said it was a wire stretching and tying device, would you believe me?
Here's the main page for patent 1,460,649 (1923). ('Ware line wrap if
your mail reader does that on its own.)
http://patimg1.uspto.gov/.piw?Docid=01460649&homeurl=http%3A%2F%2Fpatft1.uspto.gov%2Fnetacgi%2Fnph-Parser%3FSect1%3DPTO1%2526Sect2%3DHITOFF%2526d%3DPALL%2526p%3D1%2526u%3D%25252Fnetahtml%25252FPTO%25252Fsrchnum.htm%2526r%3D1%2526f%3DG%2526l%3D50%2526s1%3D1,460,649.PN.%2526OS%3DPN%2F1,460,649%2526RS%3DPN%2F1,460,649&PageNum=&Rtype=&SectionNum=&idkey=NONE&Input=View+first+page
Or this will get you a TIFF image of one of the drawings, assuming
that you have wget or that your browser can display TIFF files or that
you have downloaded the USPTO TIFF plugin.
http://patimg1.uspto.gov/.DImg?Docid=US001460649&PageNum=1&IDKey=497F0976D576&ImgFormat=tif
And here is the first page of the patent application:
http://patimg1.uspto.gov/.DImg?Docid=US001460649&PageNum=3&IDKey=497F0976D576&ImgFormat=tif
So I didn't fetch and read all the related pages. I gather this is
similar to what I know as a strapjack, a device for binding bales or
other bulky objects together with wire, before the introduction of
springy blued-steel bands. But I might be wrong.
