I live on the Iowa / Minnesota border, and have sold several homes with Air-
to-Air heat pumps. One had an absentee seller that wouldn't pay for the
"dual fuel" lp gas : he just let heat pump kept the home from freezing,
temp stayed / was set at 50 degrees, even when it dipped blow -15 F.
During that cold snap, I was worried about the house freezing, and spoke
with the furnace guy... He said that the heat pump still would heat the
home, even at -20, but wasn't as efficent when temps got below zero
degrees. He claimed that using the air to air heat pump .. the electricity
was cheaper than the LP gas, down to the zero degree temp.
Here, Air to water heat pumps the cheapest to run. Our electric coop was
promoting them, but we have a lot of ground water. One board member dug
two wells, One that he pumps the ground water up, and one that he dumps the
heat exchanged water. When some had lp gas heat costs of $300 / month, he
said his electric heat pump was keeping the house at 70 degrees for less
than $25 a month, which included the cost of pumping the water.
