I know it's of little help at this point but a useful program for backup
of specific files or directories (folders) is the Replicator from
Karenware. It is a freeware program and I use it to store copies of the
mail files and the favorites in Thunderbird and Firefox. You have to
locate the directories where the files are stored, but after that the
program will back up the data in question on a schedule if you wish.
Find it here:

I don't backup the entire hard drive very often, but I keep a printout
of the directories to see what I have installed over the years.
Find Karlen's answer to this here:

I have a backup of my drives on a removable hard drive and use Acronis
Find it here:
http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/trueimage/
to backup my complete system. If I have a crash I will most likely do a
fresh install...a major pia but overdue.
Acronis also has a differential backup
Find it here:
http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/trueimage/features-details.html
that will continually backup changes to your system and files, but to
just keep a copy of your email and bookmarks, which can nicely fit onto
a usb flash drive, I prefer Replicator.
I am still using a Win2K install which is about 2.5 years old. Regular
maintenance and frequent spyware and AV sweeps keep the system
moderately happy.
Acronis creates a Linux boot cd that you can use to boot the computer
and restore a backup from many sources to restore an image to a new hard
drive. Sounds like an ad but I just like it.
The bottom line is do something to protect your links and any other data
you want to keep. Very important data should be stored on multiple
different data storage devices or media. I use external hard drives,
usb flash drives and DVD-RAM all of which have a better memory than I do.
