Bruce, right again; my hard & heavy fire bricks couldn't take the heat. They
are now half bricks (or less).

It's not soft or hard that matters, it's the temperature rating.

As to finding supplies - check for boiler repair shops.  If they don't
stock the materials you need, they can order them for you.

The huge bookstore is Powells.  But there are several other good used
bookstores in the Portland area.  And remember that Powell's has a
separate "technical bookstore" where a lot of the metalworking books
show up.
