It's not soft or hard that matters, it's the temperature rating.

As to finding supplies - check for boiler repair shops.  If they don't
stock the materials you need, they can order them for you.

The huge bookstore is Powells.  But there are several other good used
bookstores in the Portland area.  And remember that Powell's has a
separate "technical bookstore" where a lot of the metalworking books
show up.

the resources around her are nil when it comes to forge material. The 
shipping would cost the
same as if  I drove the 200 miles to Portland, although it would give
me 
an excuse to go to that
_HUGE_ book store. I forgot the name, but not the location.
