I'm not speaking about mechanical hammers.  I believe the discussion was 
about air hammers.  Even on mechanical hammers there could be a problem over 
extending the ram.  We're working on a 25 pound Fairbanks that was used without a 
sow block.  The ram was over extended and the end result was a broken toggle 
link and bent the toggle link arms.
