Could be related to the crop circles guys. I know metal does strange stuff.
I collect (well, I used to collect, now I just sell) old antique engines,
and some of the stuff I'd run across was just plain strange. Crankshafts
separated cleanly on either side of the journals, etc. Of course the metal
in the teen's and twenties may not have been up to par with military specs
of the 40's.

up and the perfect cut some thing similar may have happened. just my guess.
