 While in the military I heard a similar story.  On the double prop choppers (chinooks or CH-46)  there is a timing shaft runing between the two props. One of the crew told me that while in flight it was possible that just touching the shaft with a piece of metal or some thing would cut it allmost instantly, like being on a laithe.  sounds like with the heat build up and the perfect cut some thing similar may have happened.  just my guess.
