Not all Fred.  Some of long ago (glow plugs) were used as an ignition source 
and not cylinder warming.  Of course the cylinder did indeed warm itself up 
after the thing took off running.  I think you're right in saying that wood 
chips will ignite quicker than diesel.  Remember though that the diesel in 
the engine is being injected at a fairly high pressure, whereas the diesel 
that you're using in the comparison is just sitting there in liquid form (I 
assume).
Yes, it's beginning to look like the FP is well within the realm of 
possibility indeed!  Make one Fred!  I'd love to, and I'm a woodworker to 
boot, but I'm thinking that those Aborigines (sp?) had some special 
"medicine" that helped get that thing going.
