With a coal forge I can heat 12-18 inches of 5/8 round but it takes
a while. By sliding the work slowly back and forth in the hottest part of
the fire you can get it hot enough to bend or light forging.

Hey Rick,

I missed part of this conversation, but the first thought that comes to my
mind on the forge is that if you use a coal forge to heat long stock, your
only going to achieve a couple inches of heat at a time, where as if you use
a gas forge that the stock passes through, your going heat whatever is in
the forge, and depending on the size (length) of the gas forge that can be
20+" of heat at a time...could let you do a lot more work in a shorter
period of time.
 Just my thought.
