Don,
I've had more luck with the malleable iron. I have also used mig.
Depending on the client, finish, etc. on some occasions I prep for a tight seam and only weld from the bottom, leaving a clean joint.
The lateral ends you buy don't usually have the same surface texture either. So blending and smoothing are part of the job as well.
