Hi Don, When is the last time you changed the liner in the gun? When you
pull the contact tip out - is there metal filings behind it?.......good
indicator of a worn liner. This is all presuming that the wire moves when
not welding - if it's jambed in the contact tip, or the feed tube in the
feeder itself - those usually cause it to run at uneven speeds. Change them
out if they do.
Also - is the wire roll been sitting a while since last used? If there is
a layer of rust on the outside wrap of wire - that can raise hell with feed
rolls, liners, contact tips, etc.
That's starting with the simple options.........
Ralph

Subject: [TheForge] Trouble shooting welder
Hoping for some advice on a problem with my very old, much used Hobart 250
mig welder. Whenever I pull the trigger the wire burns right up to the
nozzle
with a flash of blue light. I have tried making sure I have a good ground
and
filed clean the copper grounding clamps. But that didn't help.
Kindest thanks for any suggestions.
Don Plummer
