Brian,
IMO if this is an exterior job, you are definitely barking up the wrong tree
trying to use patinizing chemicals such as you would find from Triple S, Sur
Fin or Sculpt Nouveau. If they want a rust resistant finish, why not go
with a good paint? Or if you want to galvanize first, just make sure you
choose a paint that won't react with the zinc etc. If you try to patinate
with a blackening agent such as Birchwood -Casey after you galvanize I don't
think it will even work .Consider that you would need to clear coat to seal
as well. Sculpt Nouveau makes material that you can use to patinate almost
any substrate but it is a coating that can be chipped off, not what I think
you are looking for. Don't forget the time and effort to experiment with
whatever chemicals you choose. In my experience using blackening agents and
the like there was a learning curve no matter what info you get from the
makers of the material and were always used for interior pieces. My 2
cents. Good luck.
