[TheForge] Re: Shop Lighting

It's been 5 below here in NH this week. When I enter the shop and turn on
the lights - it's like glow plugs on the ceiling (my flourescents) - and
when the heat gets the place to about 50.........I have some light, but the
buzz over my left shoulder at the filing bench keeps me wondering if it's
the light or the phase converter thats on.

I too like Mike Spencer have gone with incandescents with those old
porcelain fixtures in my shop addition where my grinding, steel storage, and
die storage are - I like it better than the florescent light by a long shot.
I got this catalog named "Farm-Tek" and there were these white wash down
style incandescent lights (that could also be run with the florescent
whirrly gig bulbs - but I opted for the ability to use up the case of
incandescents I've got. The big plus I like is what Mike says.......the
little ring at the top of the light - allows me to move it from it's pretty
permanent location to just over the sheet metal break for no shadows on the
metal bending - or over the parts washer for cleaning up mechanic repairs or
power hammer anythings.

Mike, I like your little jib or track idea for one over the bench/anvil.

............and all this time I thought the headaches were from deadlines,
fuel costs, steel costs, customers inability to pay on time, and general
crap like that. :-( ............maybe it's the lighting?

Me too. I've discovered alittle bit of info on the web about T 5 fixtures
and fluorescent tubes that render true colors etc. Compared with metal
halides the energy usage and cost savings look significant. The
tri-phosphorus and better tubes are a bit pricey at $10 to12 apiece, but I
think the quality of light will be worth it. The fixtures come with
electronic ballasts so I don't think low temperature will be a factor
although I'm not sure.

cheers,
