[TheForge] Shop Lighting

AS you see there is a wide variety of opinions on lighting. Since you have
a tall ceiling I recommend that you put in on twin 4 foot fixture for every
16 square feet of floor space. Put these in on several switches so you
don't have to light the entire shop if you are just working in a corner.
Next put in a couple of halogen lights as tasks lights. I use the twin 100
watt style over my hot work area and over my work bench. These are hot
lights and can be uncomfortable to have shinning down on you head after a
while. If you put one at each corner of the shop it would fill in all of the
dark spots the florescent left You can get full spectrum lamps for the
florescent. I would put in a mix of the full spectrum and the common shop
light bulbs. This way you get good general lighting and color corrected
task lighting. No florescent likes cold weather. True some will not start
others will. But none of them work well in the cold. If you can spring for
the fixture a high pressure sodium light will work in all temps but it takes
a while to warm up and put out light. One of these at each end of your shop
will turn it to daylight at the cost of having a few deep shadows.

Just my two cents.

Subject: [TheForge] Shop Lighting

Greetings,

I'm choosing lighting for my shop. It is a blank slate at this point. The
ceiling height is approx. 13 feet. The walls and ceiling are painted white.
Does anyone know any reference for selecting various forms of light
fixtures. I'm fishing for ideas before I talk to anyone in the position to
sell me something. The quality of light (how accurately it renders colors
etc.) and price to buy and run are my concerns. Any help appreciated.

Regards,
Bill Woolley
